SeCan plays an important role in Canadian agriculture. As the largest supplier of certified seed to Canadian farmers, SeCan serves more than 1,000 members engaged in seed production, processing and marketing. They build partnerships with Canadian farmers and promote profitability in agricultural activities nationwide. SeCan turned to the experts at 3DA with a unique challenge—to offer farmers a revolutionary tool that would help them determine a crop’s potential for success prior to sowing the seeds.
Imagine having the ability to predict the outcome of a crop before it is even planted. Without a crystal ball, 3DA had to come up with something brilliant. And so they created the country’s first “calculator” for farmers.
The farmers’ calculator is an ingenius online tool to assist farmers from coast to coast in better managing their crop. It will also help them to make decisions that have an enormous impact on their livelihood. With thousands of seed varieties available to Canadian farmers, 3DA had to first develop an extensive database of agricultural information. They designed a user-friendly interface where farmers and members of the agricultural community could easily navigate from one seed variety to another to determine the ones best suited for their individual needs.
Behind the scenes, the mechanics of the system may be complex, but to the user, the process couldn’t be easier. Farmers simply input the following criteria into the online calculator; their seed choice, acreage to be covered, farm’s location, soil classification, and other key factors. The easy-to-use calculator tabulates the information and uses a unique formula to determine how much it will cost the farmer to manage that particular crop. The calculator also generates retail and wholesale crop values and estimated profit, putting control back in the hands of the farmers before the crop is even planted.
Canadian farms now have the ability to evaluate a crop’s potential before actually planting. This allows them to detour from a crop should they feel that it would not be a profitable choice. This is a benefit to everyone in the business, including farmers, consumers and exporters, and helps SeCan ensure that the Canadian seed industry continues to grow in terms of crops and members.
